Garda JLO’s are specially trained officers who are assigned to work with underage offenders (under 18 years of age). They deal with young people and their families re: crime prevention, the operation of the Youth Diversion Projects and other areas related to young people and the criminal justice system. JLO’s also work informally with young people at risk of offending and liaise with teachers, Child & Family Agency staff, other relevant agencies and other Gardai in the area.
There are three Juvenile Liaison Officers in Co. Wexford with the county divided between the three officers.
Geographical Area Countywide there are three JLO’s in Co. Wexford and the county is divided between them:
- Garda Alan Byrne : Wexford
- Garda Niall O Donnell : New Ross & Enniscorthy
- Garda Denis Mc Carthy : Gorey & Enniscorthy
Target Age Group 12-18 years. In exceptional cases, depending on specified offences 10 & 11 year olds may be considered.
Eligibility Criteria Must be over 12 years of age and under 18 yrs. They must accept responsibility for the offence committed and agree to co-operate with the JLO.
Referrals A youth has to be after committing an offence that a Garda is investigating.
JLO’s work on a roster basis but cover weekends and evenings to facilitate meetings and appointments with families to administer cautions.
