Wexford has the fifth highest Traveller population in Ireland. There are two Traveller Community Health Programmes in the county. Both programs are managed by Wexford Local Development Company (WLD) and funded by the HSE and WLD. The project in North Wexford works with individuals and families in Ferns, Bunclody, Enniscorthy and Gorey. The South Wexford project covers Clonroche, New Ross, Wexford town and Taghmon. There are nine Traveller women employed as Community Health Workers.
The aim of the programme is to increase the health knowledge and access to Health Services for Traveller families thus improving the health of the Traveller Community. The programme runs 6 Women’s Group and 1 Youth Group.
