The background to the Child Health Services is based on “Best Health for Children – Developing a Partnership with Families” (1999). The key outcomes of this strategy are;

The completion of the Child Health Developmental Assessments from primary visit to 3.5 years are under-pinned by the Programme for Action for Children.

Target Age Group All children in County Wexford aged between 0-3.5 years. All children in Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 6th Class while in Primary School. Primary and Post Primary Vaccinations programmes
Referrals Self-referral, referral from GP, Primary Care Team, Hospital or Allied Health Professionals, Social Workers and Schools.
Eligibility Criteria All children under 3.5 years have an automatic entitlement. All school-going children have an automatic entitlement.

Child Health Clinics |
Child Health Clinics are held weekly in Wexford, Gorey, New Ross and Enniscorthy on set days and times. These clinics include well baby clinics, Enuresis Clinics and Breastfeeding Support Clinics. Spoon-feeding Clinics and Antenatal Classes are provided in some parts of the county. |

School Screening Service |
There is a national screening programme to determine hearing and visual defects in schools children. Junior Infants classes are tested for vision. Hearing testing is undertaken in Senior Infants. Vision and Hearing Screening of all new students to the school is undertaken. |

Vaccination Programme |
The vaccination programme below is undertaken in primary and secondary school during the school year for boys and girls; Primary School; Junior Infants MMR and 4 in 1 Booster Recalls from Senior Infants Secondary School; The programme is arranged by Administration Staff at local offices in consultation with Area Medical Officers, Public Health Immunisation Team and Schools. The immunisation includes Tdap-1st year students and HPV programme to 6th year students. |

Children with Complex Needs |
Disability Liaison Health Nurses provide information, advice and support to families and carers, which includes requests for day and residential placements, respite and home support. The Disability PHN has a countywide remit. |
